Course description

A practitioner-focused course that shows participants how to understand, design, implement, and maintain an Environmental Management System aligned with ISO 14001:2026. The course follows the PDCA model and translates the requirements of ISO 14001 into practical actions that organizations can apply to improve environmental performance, meet compliance obligations, reduce environmental risks, and support sustainability goals.

Participants will learn how to determine organizational context, identify relevant interested parties, define the EMS scope, establish environmental policy and objectives, evaluate environmental aspects and impacts, address risks and opportunities, and develop practical operational controls. The course also explains how to manage documented information, competence, awareness, internal and external communication, emergency preparedness, monitoring and measurement, evaluation of compliance, internal audits, management review, nonconformity, corrective action, and continual improvement.

This practitioner course demonstrates how to design, quantify, and report an organizational greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory in accordance with ISO 14064-1:2018. We map organizational and operational boundaries (direct, energy-indirect, and other indirect), select a base year, and structure emissions/removals by relevant categories. You’ll learn to gather activity data, choose credible emission factors, and document assumptions, calculation methods, and consolidation approaches. We cover data controls, uncertainty, and materiality considerations, handling changes (recalculations), and tracking reductions against targets. Electricity and heat purchases, mobile and stationary combustion, process and fugitive sources, and biogenic CO₂ are addressed with practical worksheets. Reporting focuses on transparency, completeness, and consistency, with inventories prepared for internal decision-making and optional third-party assurance readiness. The course includes templates for boundary decisions, factor registers, data quality checks, and management review inputs, as well as Canadian/BC-specific notes on carbon pricing, facility reporting, and offsets/attributes. Designed for standalone inventories or integration with ISO 14001 and broader ESG disclosures.
